Blue Lagoon Iceland

If you are planning to fly from Europe to North America, or from North America to Europe, and if you feel curious about Iceland, one good option is to fly with Iceland Air and benefit from their free stopover in Iceland. The airline allows you to break your flight in two parts, letting you spend some time in this island and get to know its wonders.

In several previous posts I have described my experience touring Iceland during one week. You can refer to those posts for more ideas on what is best to do and visit in Iceland, and then decide how many days you would like to spend in it.

If you can allow yourself to spend a whole day in Iceland, it would probably be best for you to choose and excursion through the Golden Circle or the Southern Coast. If you do not have a whole day, nevertheless, you can also spend the time you are there in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik.

At the same time, you may just be tired and willing to relax for a few hours, while also enjoying the Icelandic landscape. In that case, a good option would be to visit the very touristy Blue Lagoon.

Located only 20 kilometers from the airport, the Blue Lagoon is a well-known touristic spot in Iceland. It is a spa built around a lagoon located in the middle of a lava landscape, which has natural spring waters with a blue color resulting from the presence of silica minerals on it.
Getting to the Blue Lagoon is quite easy; there are frequent buses serving it to and from the airport, as well as too and from the city of Reykjavik. These buses are also coordinated with the flights, to make sure you will always arrive on time for checking in and going through security with no problems. Check for different transfers, spas and tours in Blue Lagoon
.
Upon arrival in the Blue Lagoon you have to pay a quite a bit pricey fee of 30 euros to get in. Children and the elderly, as well as teenagers, enjoy reduced fees –mostly half price-. The admission ticket allows you entry to the locker rooms, showers and the main pool, around which you can also find a sauna and a couple of steam bathing areas. There is a cold water springer and a drinking water fountain close to the sauna and steam baths, which you should always use before and after entering these rooms to avoid dizziness.

The main pool has a muddy bottom and warm salty water, but the main attraction is the wooden boxes you can find on several of its irregular edges. These boxes contain well-scented silica mixes, which you can apply in your face and body as mascara. You are advised to leave it on for about 10 minutes and then take it off.

My personal advice is to first try in a small part of your face and body, to check for possible reactions to the minerals; and never leave the product on for longer than advises. In my case, I got a minor burning sensation and red coloring in the area for not following these guidelines.

It might also be good to protect your hair with a shower cap or a hair product –my hairdresser often advices Vaseline as an inexpensive protection for pools -. The interaction of the salt, the water, the sun and the minerals can damage your hair or leave it sticky and dry, highly difficult to comb it. Probably due to this, the Blue Lagoon’s showers are equipped with conditioner dispensers to aid the rehydration of your hair.
The usual soap dispensers and powerful hair driers are also available, but you should bring your own shampoo and comb or brush. Towels and swim suits are also available in the Blue Lagoon; if you did not bring your own, you can borrow them for a fee of 5 euros each.

On a sunny day, you can enjoy bathing in the lagoon and then just lay on a rest chair and sunbathe. There is also a relaxing area under the shade if you want to protect your skin from the sun. This room has big glass windows with a view of the lagoon.

If you will be staying longer in Iceland, you can spare your visit to the Blue Lagoon and go instead to one of the many pools in Reykjavik, or a natural pool somewhere else in the island. Nevertheless, if your stay in the island is short, a few hours in the Blue Lagoon are worth for getting a taste of Iceland, and for relaxing in between your flights.

Have a safe flight! And enjoy your trip!
